Chitin Chitosan and Their Physicochemical Properties

Chitin is crystalline, intractable, highly hydrophobic, and insoluble in water and organic solvents. It is soluble in hexafluoroisopropanol, hexafluoroacetone, chloro-alcohols in conjugation with aqueous solutions of mineral acids (Madhavan 1992) and dimethylacetamide containing 5 lithium chloride. Chitin is a non-toxic, non-allergenic, anti-microbial and biodegradable polymer. It has a strong positive charge which allows it to bind with negatively charged surfaces or materials including metals, skin and macromolecules such as proteins. Effect of Bt Toxin on Nontarget Organisms

The primary requirement for the action of Cry toxins is the processing of the pro-toxin into its activated form, which occurs in an alkaline pH and by specific proteases which are present in the gut of the target insects. More importantly, the toxins identify specific receptors on the gut epithelial cells of susceptible insect larvae. So, the mammals including humans were thought to be safe from the effects of this class of proteins. Subsequent to inhalation of pollen, allergic response occurs in many individuals, leading to a common symptom of hay fever. This is due to the release of histamine, a substance formed from the amino acid histidine through decarboxylation (Figure 5.4). Histamine is made and stored in the mast cell and in many other cells of the body. Release of histamine occurs in anaphylaxis, or as a consequence of allergies it is also triggered by certain drugs and chemicals. Histamine is a powerful vasodilator and causes dilation and increases permeability of blood vessels. It stimulates secretion of pepsin it can reduce the blood pressure and can induce shock, if severe enough. In excessive concentrations histamine can cause vascular collapse.


Recently, a question regarding a possible role of phthalate esters in the pathogenesis of asthma has been raised 83,84 . The studies in question found phthalate esters from vinyl products in the air of households with asthmatic children. They speculated on a possible mechanism for DEHP to cause asthma. The hypothesis is that DEHP and its metabolites have some structural similarities to, and can mimic, some prostaglandins and thromboxanes, and the widespread use of DEHP in wall coverings, flooring, and other construction material leads to the induction or exacerbation of asthma. The merit of this hypothesis is questionable. There is also no direct evidence that DEHP or MEHP acts like prostaglandin, the hormone associated with inflammatory responses. Furthermore, there is no indication of any sensitization potential from exposure to DEHP, based on animal experiments or human patch tests 25 .
