Populations That Are Unusually Susceptible

No specific population that would be particularly susceptible to chlorophenol intoxication has been identified. Because of the extensive hepatic conjugation and renal clearance of these compounds, individuals with liver or kidney dysfunction may be the most sensitive population. The results of recent studies indicate that individuals with cirrhosis of the liver (Macdonald et al. 1992 Ohta 1991) or hepatitis (Ohta 1991) show impaired Phase II conjugation. Chronic renal failure is associated with the inability to clear conjugated metabolites, resulting in elevated, steady-state whole body concentrations of glucuronide and sulfate metabolites (Martin et al. 1991). Patients with acute tubular necrosis, with or without cirrhosis, show markedly elevated urinary -glucuronidase concentrations (Solis-Herruzo et al. 1986) and, theoretically, a high body burden of unconjugated metabolites. These data suggest that

Arsenic Toxicity of Food Chain

Cirrhosis and ascites, sensory disturbance and peripheral neuritis, anorexia and loss of weight (Webb 1966). Although the effects of arsenic, as recounted previously, result in several kinds of diseases, it certainly may also impact adversely on the immune system, which may predispose to viral bacterial infections. Several of such diseases resulting from alterations of the immunologic surveillance may not have been known to be due to arsenic and therefore may not have been attributed to arsenic effects. A probing into this area is therefore appropriate. The toxicity of specific arsenic chemical species is mentioned later (Oremland and Stolz 2005).

Flavivirus Yellow Fever Dengue Japanese Encephalitis

The YF remains a serious endemic disease and a constant threat in Sub-Saharan Africa and South America (including Trinidad). It does not prevail in Asia, Oceania, nor the Indian Ocean. The incidence of YF varies greatly from one year to another in 1997, the WHO considered an annual incidence of YF of 200 000 cases, with 30 000 deaths per year. Many YF infections are mild, but the disease can cause severe, life-threatening illness. Symptoms can include high fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, vomiting, and backache. After a brief recovery period, the infection can lead to shock, bleeding, and kidney and liver failure with ''black vomit''. Liver failure causes jaundice (yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes), which gives YF its name. Symptoms start three to six days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Yellow fever virus is diagnosed by a blood test. There is no specific treatment, but infected people should rest and drink plenty of fluids. Yellow fever virus can be...

Noninfectious And Noncommunicable Diseases And Conditions Associated With The Water Environment

The major noncommunicable disease deaths in the United States in 1988 were due to diseases of the heart, malignant neoplasms, cerebrovascular diseases, accidents, atheriosclerosis, diabetes mellitus, and chronic liver disease and cirrhosis (accounting for 73 percent of all deaths). An analysis of mortality due to noncommunicable diseases in five subregions of the Americas in 1980 showed 75 percent of the total mortality attributed to noncommunicable diseases in North America (United States and Canada) 60 percent in Temperate South American countries (Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay) 57 percent in the Caribbean area (including Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti) 45 percent in Tropical South America (including the Andean countries, Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, and Suriname) and 28 percent in Continental Middle America (Central America, Mexico, and Panama).117 The mortality can be expected to shift more to noncommunicable causes in the...

Chronic effects

Symptoms from chronic carbon tetrachloride exposure are similar to those seen in acute exposure (see above). With long-term chronic exposure to low concentrations of carbon tetrachloride, both kidney and liver injury occur. However the milder the exposure, the greater the tendency for predominantly liver effects (Reid, 2001). Toxic hepatitis and cirrhosis have been reported after chronic exposure to high concentrations of carbon tetrachloride (ATSDR, 1992a). Persistent nausea should prompt an evaluation of liver function for toxic hepatitis.

Approximately half of 24 deaths observed in 2,061 Yu-Cheng victims by the end of 1983 were attributed to hepatoma, cirrhosis, or unspecified liver diseases with hepatomegaly (Hsu et al. 1985). Diagnoses were made from clinical symptoms and unspecified laboratory examinations. These findings are inconclusive due to unreported incidences and comparison values and high prevalences of hepatitis B, cirrhosis, and liver cancer in Taiwan (Rogan et al. 1989).

Suppressor gene

While the detection of specific p53 mutations in liver tumors has provided insight into the etiology of certain liver cancers, the application of these specific mutations to the early detection of cancer offers great promise for prevention.35 A recent report by Kirk et al.36 reported for the first time the detection of codon 249 p53 mutations in the plasma of liver tumor patients from the Gambia however, the mutational status of the tumors were not known. These authors also reported a small number of cirrhosis patients having this mutation and given the strong relation between cirrhosis and future development of HCC, the possibility of this mutation being an early detection marker needs to be explored.

The terms noncommunicable and noninfectious are used interchangeably. The major noncommunicable disease deaths in the United States in 2000 were due to diseases of the heart, malignant neoplasms, cerebrovascular diseases, accidents, atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus, and chronic liver disease and cirrhosis.
