Synthesis

DDT [l,l,l-trichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethane] (also called dichlorodi-phenyltrichloromethane, hence DDT), is prepared by reaction (8-3l) between trichloroacetaldehyde (chloral) and chlorobenzene. The mechanism of the reaction involves the electrophilic addition of a carbocation to the aromatic ring; a Friedel-Crafts type of reaction. The mechanism is shown in reactions (8-3l)-(8-34).
