methodology for synthetic routes in the GSK Fast Lifecycle for Assessment of Synthetic Chemistry or FLASCtm tool. In each case, sustainability metrics were used to develop a practical tool to guide bench-level scientists and engineers in the selection of more sustainable choices.

6.1.2.4 Total Cost Assessment. Another related AIChE/CWRT focus group was convened to develop a Total Cost Accounting tool about the same time as the sus-tainability metrics focus group was meeting (AIChE, 1999). These two efforts enabled a certain synergistic outcome for both projects given their very complementary discussions on appropriate metrics and valuation. Total Cost Assessment/ Accounting provides a very convenient form of valuation for Life Cycle assessments, especially in a business context, and this will hopefully be applied in the future for GSK tools. This is discussed further in Section 6.2.

6.1.2.5 Green Packaging. Packaging issues are of considerable importance, especially in Europe, and manufacturers are increasingly pressured to decrease packaging impacts. GSK has maintained an interest in packaging since the early 1990s and has consistently sought to influence packaging designers and marketing groups to consider the impacts of GSK packaging. Through a thorough knowledge of information gathered for European and UK packaging levies, GSK has been able to develop a considerable understanding of its packaging and potential impacts. These data have been combined with LCI information and traditional EHS considerations to design a metrics-based green packaging guide for its Consumer and Nutritional Healthcare businesses, and they will soon have one for its

pharmaceuticals packaging. The guide for Consumer Healthcare is shown in Figure 6.3. GSK has also developed a user-friendly interactive corporate intranet site for packaging designers that is described in Section 8.7.

6.1.2.6 Conclusion. It has been said in a sports context that "if you are not keeping score, you are only practicing." This truism has been applied to business and roughly paraphrased as "if you are not measuring, you cannot be managing effectively." Metrics of many kinds are being used on a continuing basis at GSK to effectively manage, benchmark, and challenge performance in all areas of its business.
