Disincentives

Many governments have tried to of reduce dependency on landfilling. For example, the British Government introduced a Landfill Tax in 1996, which reached £12 per tonne for active waste and £2 per tonne for inert waste in 2002 (the active waste tax will rise to £15 per tonne by 2004). An enquiry suggested that there was no significant change in the amount of active waste disposed, although there was a 20-30 Mt reduction in the disposal of inert waste (mostly construction and demolition material).
